Abstract
Orthorhombic Li2MgSiO4 in which all the cations lie in tetrahedral sites can incorporate large amount of Cr4+ ions.
Cr4+:Li2MgSiO4 exhibits broad-band fluorescence around 1.2 μm, with fluorescence lifetime exceeding 100 μs at room temperature. This is the longest lifetime reported so far for a tetrahedral Cr4+ doped compound. Such a value is explained by assuming thermalization between the 1E and 3T2 Cr4+ energy levels, 1E king the lowest one.
