Abstract
For the purpose of understanding the effect of the clear CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) layer on the light distribution in human heads, we have used 3D FEM (Finite Element Method) to solve the photon diffusion equation combined with the radiosity concept to predict the light propagation in the scattering and non-scattering layers. The numerical model for the calculation is a hemisphere which simulates human heads more realistically than slabs which have been used for numerical simplicity. The numerical model consists of a hemispherical shell and a hemisphere and they are connected by a clear layer. The distributions of the fluence rate and the light path probability have been obtained and shown by using the technique of computer graphics. As the result, the clear CSF layers have been found to have a great effect on the light propagation in human heads if the thickness of the clear CSF layer is thick.
